Go Far, a recess based exercise program, originally started many years ago at John Lyman School by a local parent, Jen Schulten. The success of the program was evident the moment it started and has now flourished at many of our schools including Brewster, Korn, and Memorial. Currently, it is offered at recess for Brewster, Korn and Lyman students and after school for Memorial students. In June, there is a large culminating event at the Durham Fairgrounds called GO FAR-GO FAST. Kids from all over the community come out and run in this huge event. Thousands of students have been positively affected by the success of the program throughout the years.
Parents at recess run the bulk of the program. The bulk of the program is run by parents at recess. On specific days of the week the students come outside to recess and run or walk laps around a set course and keep track of their laps. At the end of recess the laps are totaled and recorded with parent volunteers. At certain mile achievements the students are given different types of charms or tokens. The ultimate goal is to reach 26. 2 miles and to be awarded their marathon token of achievement.
Because of the success of the program, Jen has enlisted the help of many different parents. Jen is always looking for new parents to help out at recess time. If any parent is willing to donate their time please call your child's school to see who is the contact person for go far at that school. You can also just email Mr. Edwards for more information at [email protected]
This is an amazing program that promotes a positive healthy lifestyle. I hope that parents encourage their children to participate for any amount of time during their recess.
